As the wise Jeremy Clarkson likes to say, today “I did a thing.” Well… hopefully I have by the time you’re reading this, because at the time of writing I’ve achieved absolutely nothing except giving myself a throbbing headache.

In just a few hours the clock will hit 12am, fireworks will explode across the globe, and people everywhere will begin loudly declaring their “New Year’s Resolutions” — ambitious goals that are supposed to last 12 months but usually tap out after about three weeks.

One of my resolutions this year was to create a blog. Having my own website has always been a dream of mine. It feels like having a little personal home on the internet — a sacred place I can customise, decorate, and dump whatever thoughts I want into. Plus, how hard could it be? Click a few buttons and boom, instant website. Then I’d just write a few sentences, paste a few photos, and voilà — a functioning blog. Piece of cake, I thought. Instead, I’ve spent the past few days trying to wrap my head around DNS propagation, web hosting, and secure sockets.

At this point it feels like I’m learning a new language. With my brain threatening to explode and still no website to show for it, I decided to take a break from the tech side of things and return to the heart of blogging… the writing.

Most successful blogs have one thing in common: they focus on a niche topic and are written by people who know what they’re talking about. And that’s where I hit my next hurdle. I’m currently at university. My qualifications consist of student, which is basically someone who is still officially learning how to be useful. So what on earth could I write about?

And then it hit me. There is one subject I’ve spent 21 years studying. A niche so specific no one else on the internet is covering it. The perfect topic: my life.

So who am I? My name’s Lachie, and I’m studying a Bachelor of Vision Science with the ultimate goal of becoming an Optometrist. This blog will follow the events of my life, meaning it’ll be about the real, unfiltered experience of being a student — the good days, the bad days, and the days where absolutely nothing goes to plan.

If you’re a student, thinking about becoming one, or you just enjoy watching people dramatically fail, welcome to my blog — I hope you get something out of it. And if I’m the only reader, then hello future me. I hope these posts bring back some fond memories.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to get back to figuring out how to make my bloody website actually work so this blog can exist.
